Leçon 5 / 9 — Chapitre 9: Consolider : grammaire et pièges fréquents

Les prépositions qui posent problème

Les prépositions ne se traduisent pas une par une. Voici les cas qui reviennent le plus dans un cadre professionnel.

in / on / at pour le temps

  • "at" + heure : "at 9 a.m.", "at noon"
  • "on" + jour ou date : "on Monday", "on the 12th"
  • "in" + mois, année, période : "in March", "in 2025", "in the morning"

"See you on Monday at 10, in the morning." rassemble les trois.

in / on / at pour le lieu

  • "at" + un point : "at the office", "at the airport", "at reception"
  • "in" + un espace fermé : "in the meeting room", "in the building"
  • "on" + une surface : "on the table", "on the second floor"

Les prépositions après certains verbes (à apprendre en bloc)

  • "to depend on" (dépendre de), "to wait for" (attendre), "to listen to" (écouter)
  • "to be responsible for" (être responsable de), "to apologise for" (s'excuser de)
  • "to arrive at" (a place) / "to arrive in" (a city)

Piège fréquent chez les francophones

  • "I wait you." → "I'm waiting for you." ("to wait" a besoin de "for")
  • "It depends of the price." → "It depends on the price."
  • "I'm responsible of the team." → "I'm responsible for the team."
  • "on Monday" et non "the Monday".

Exemple concret : "I'll wait for you at reception at 2. The meeting is in room 3, on the first floor. It depends on the client whether we finish by 4." (Je vous attends à l'accueil à 14 h. La réunion est en salle 3, au premier étage. Ça dépend du client si on finit à 16 h.)
